The power of community and belonging – BrandBirds example

What can a community provide, and why is it worth being part of a community?

It has been almost a year since I encountered BrandBirds within the framework of a university project, and I got to know that community, which has become one of the most influential factors in my journey. I never thought that a community could have such power and such a significant impact on people.

BrandBirds csapattalálkozó

One day left until the Hungarian Marketing Festival, a truly important milestone in the life of the community and BrandBirds. The planning and preparation for this event started months ago. It’s a point where marketing experts, web designers, photographers, brand builders, and ambitious online entrepreneurs gather to grow and develop. Wow, more than a thousand people, an impressive booth, and a 9-member BrandBirds team. Nine individuals who are true BrandBirds members, part of the community. They are not strangers attracted by work and money, but partners, and friends, who love what they do and are enthusiastic and happy to collaborate. There’s no need to wear a tie for a team meeting, and one can go as relaxed and cheerful as if meeting friends for a drink in the evening. This is a completely different atmosphere from a regular workplace. This is a community.

A community that helps when you’re in trouble. A community that answers when you have a question. A community that encourages and supports you when you feel desperate. A community, the BrandBirds.

Why BrandBirds?

Throughout history, we have seen thousands of examples of the immense power of a community, the sense of belonging to a community, and shared motivations. However, above the community, there has always been a leader, someone capable of bringing individuals together and forging a common motivation from individualistic ones. In my opinion, a good community does not have a leader but a guiding figure who can step up if necessary but still remain an equal partner.

That’s why what Robi Mészáros, the founder of BrandBirds, came up with years ago, works. He didn’t want to lead or „control” the group. His aim was not to moderate posts on a daily basis and immediately delete members in response to criticism. He communicated and tried to understand the reasons behind things.

The primary goal was always to give something. He didn’t want to ask for anything, but to give. When he was giving free brand-building advice as a graphic designer (not even aware of the true value it held), he was still helping. When you talk to him, you see the sparkle in his eyes, the motivation, the ideas, the determination that propelled BrandBirds and the community to where they are now.

Why is it good to belong to a community, and what can you get from it?

This question is much more complicated than providing a concise answer in one or two sentences, but I’ll try to respond briefly. If you haven’t experienced the power of belonging to a community, just try out the BrandBirds Club group. Recently, I asked for help related to our family business, and the results were amazing. More than 50 comments and assistance, lots of positive impressions, and ideas came in.

This is what a community is capable of. I don’t know if any other platform has such a significant impact.

I suggest that if you can, always give. Help and try to offer useful suggestions to others. Of course, it doesn’t mean you have to comment on everything, far from it. However, if you are involved in the topic, do your best to help as much as possible. If you prefer not to be in the spotlight and rather be the quiet reader type, I still recommend joining such communities. I am also this type, and I only comment when I feel what I can suggest is highly relevant, but I still benefit a lot from the posts I read there.

Finally, the most important thing: relationships. In a community, you can build connections that not only influence your business but also have an impact on your everyday life. People who think similarly to you, who have similar motivations as you. The world is becoming increasingly individualized, and with that, I believe the power of micro-communities will play a more crucial role in our lives than ever before.
